Sookmyung Women's University hosted a global academic event celebrating the 110th anniversary of its foundation at the Samsung Centennial Memorial Hall, Samsung Convention Center, on 6.
This event, entitled 'Global Expansion of Fateful Spirit and Culture,' was held as part of '2016 International Conference on Cultural Policy' jointly organized by Sookmyung Women 's University and the Arts Management Support Center.
The Cultural Policy Conference is an international conference that discusses research results and practices on theory and practice of cultural policy.
This is the most authoritative and historic conference in the field, held every two years since its debut in Bergen, Norway in 1999. More than 500 scholars, researchers and practitioners from more than 50 countries publish about 300 papers each time.
Sookmyung Women's University hosted this conference for the first time in Asia as a leading cultural policy university in commemoration of the 110th anniversary of its foundation.
In the opening ceremony on the 5th, the roundtable invitation of world scholars of six countries was held on the change of the role of cultural policy in the 21st century, and various topic sessions including cultural policy, education and civil society participation will be held on the campus to 8th. Presenters were Kim Myung-hee, president of Sookmyung Women's University's APWINC, and Khamolat InDharat, a professor at Thailand's Sukotai Tammatirat National Open University at an academic event on 6.
Standing on the podium under the theme of "Women Education and the Spirit of Destiny in Latin America," Kim Myung-hee introduced the APWINC's projects and achievements with Latin American women aimed at improving women's socioeconomic status through ICT and e-commerce education.
Professor Khamolat made a presentation on "Empowering Asian women through ICT and e-business solutions".
Following the presentation of the topic, Oh Jae-rim, a professor at Sookmyung Women's University, hosted the forum, while Kim Jang-saeng of Yonsei University, Kim Jong-un of Hannam University and Kenneth W. Widmer of the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology made the announcement. A question-and-answer session was also held later.
"We were able to promote the cultural and artistic policies and management skills of Sookmyung Women's University by holding a conference with scholars from around the world," said an official from Sookmyung Women's University.
Meanwhile, the first international conference on cultural policy in Asia will also be joined by world-renowned scholars. At the opening ceremony on 5, Ian Bruma, a world-renowned scholar of bard University in New York, delivered a keynote speech under the theme of "Culture and Nation: From Chinese imperial calligraphy culture to K-Pop culture."
Dr. Sharon Zukin of Brooklyn University in New York will take charge of the keynote speech at Dongdaemun Design Plaza on 8 afternoon.
"We expect that this will serve as an opportunity to discuss cultural policy discourse centered around the West from the perspective of Asia and broaden the scope of cultural policy research," said an official at Sookmyung Women's University.
