Sookmyung Women's University has held an international seminar to explore ways to build capacity for digital transformation of higher education in developing countries.

Sookmyung Women's University's Asia Pacific Women's Information Network Center (APWINC), as the UNESCO Chair, hosted the "2023 UNESCO UNITWIN Joint Seminar" at the Seoul Garden Hotel on May 12th.

Sookmyung Women's University, Handong University, Korea National Open University, and Korea National University of Education co-hosted the seminar, which was co-organized by Kihong Yoo of the Democratic Party of South Korea and Byungwook Kim of the People Power Party. The seminar, which was sponsored by the Ministry of Education, was simultaneously broadcast online.

A total of 70 people participated in the seminar, including Yoo and Kim, as well as Sookmyung Women's University President Yunkeum Jang, Handong University President Dosoung Choi, and representatives from local partner universities in Nepal and Indonesia.

Participants discussed ways to bridge the gap in higher education in developing countries in the digital age brought on by COVID-19, and established the future direction of higher education and models for international development cooperation.

"This seminar is an important opportunity for 43 universities from 23 countries to explore solidarity and development with various partner universities,” said Yoo, “We look forward to further expanding the UNITWIN project to increase deeper solidarity and support."

"Before and after the pandemic, education is one of the most emphasized areas for digital transformation," said Jang, "Sookmyung Women's University has been conducting programs for female university students in four ASEAN countries to enhance their digital capabilities and foster female entrepreneurship, with a focus on digital entrepreneurship training."

"We hope that this seminar will serve as an opportunity for the host universities to create innovative ways to develop education in developing countries."

Jungin Jo, Deputy Secretary-General of the APWINC, shared the reality of the digital gender gap in the ASEAN region and emphasized the need for ASEAN women to be digitally empowered. "Through Sookmyung Women's University's digital empowerment program, we hope that ASEAN women will not only have more opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship, but will also produce more female entrepreneurs," Jo said.

The UNESCO UNITWIN program promotes knowledge sharing and collaboration among universities around the world to strengthen the capacity of higher education institutions.

Since 2016, Sookmyung Women's University has collaborated with 18 universities in 9 countries to conduct various activities, including empowering women through digital and leadership local training. This year, the university will conduct 29 programs, which are expected to benefit 750 students from the partner universities.
